Punarjani Garden is located in the picturesque town of Thiruvilwamala in the northern terrain of Thrissur district of Kerala state connecting Ottappalam, Palakkad and Thrissur. It is a scenic hilly village surrounded by greenery on the banks of Baratha Puzha. It is located 47 kilometers towards north-east of the District Head Quarters Thrissur. The village, which is more of a temple town, is located on the banks of the Bharathappuzha river, with nearest towns being Shornur, Pazhayannur and Ottapalam.

The place is famous for the Vilwadrinatha Temple, which is among the rare Sri Rama temples in Kerala. Vilwadhiri Nadha Kshethram is one of the 64 Beeja Kshethrams in India. Lord Ram and Lakshman had came to this place in their quest for Sita who was abducted by Ravana. They sat in this particular place back to back, one facing the east and the other the west. It is believed that saint Amalakarishi meditated over Lord Vishnu here and Lord Vishnu gave darshan to the saint in the form of Lord Rama. The meditation place of the saint is still seen here.

The place is also known for the Ivor Mutt, believed to be set up by the Pandava princes. It is situated on the banks of River Nila and is famous for ceremonies performed for the dead. The Parakkottukavu Thalappoli festival falls on the last sunday of the malayalam month of Medam. The fireworks spectacles in this pooram would match up to the fireworks of the world famous Thrissur Pooram. To the east of Tiruvilwamala temple is a cave, known as the Punarjani. It is believed that trekking through this cave would end one’s cycle of birth and deaths. This cave will be open to the public only on the Ekadasi day in the Malayalam month of Kumbha. The place is also famous for the kasavu clothing made in nearby villages like Kuthampulli.

The place has contributed many writers and artistes to the cultural and literary scenario of Kerala, including the renowned writer V.K.N. (Vadakke Koottala Narayanan Kutty Nair), Sarvasri Venkichan Swami who modified the percussion instrument, the maddalam, and gave it its modern form and Kalamandalam Appukutty Poduval..
